REBECCA GOULDSON
METAL RELIEF ARTIST
‘I'm passionate about image making in metal, combining and pushing the boundaries of techniques from a variety of creative traditions.’
I create elegant metal wall pieces. I fell in love with etching, and the magic of capturing images on the surface of metal, eighteen years ago whilst studying metalworking. Since then I've used etching, alongside an ever growing palette of metal colouring and finishing techniques, to find new ways to work
with images in a variety of metals, including copper, brass, zinc and gilding metal.
My influences include both the built environment and the natural landscape. I use drawing, printmaking and photography as a starting point to investigate particular themes, or subjects.
The textures and pattern of the built environment form a basis to site responsive work, often with geometric and organic motifs working in contrast to each other. I search for details of human interaction with this environment, which provide a key to imagining the history of a site. Worn and distressed
architectural surfaces provide inspiration for the etchings, but also for the layered approach to the processes I use.

More recently, my practice is influenced by the beauty of historic industrial architecture, machinery and tools. This beauty is often derived from the subject's function, and sometimes from its imagined function, when its use is initially ambiguous. Sometimes it stems from the subversion of this function when industrial sites are abandoned or machinery taken away from their original context. Often perceived as
printing plates, the wall pieces share this energetic beauty, which is linked to their sense of potential to function, through their ability to create multiple prints.
